Conversation Classes (Beg. Level)

This course is ideal for people who have a basic working knowledge of spoken French and want to maintain and improve their fluency. It will concentrate on communicating in real-life situations through discussions, role playing and debate.

The goal of the conversation classes is to enhance one’s ability to speak French in real daily life situations.

These classes explore French and Francophone societies. Participants discuss the differences between French and American cultures through a variety of topics such as Culture, Arts, Literature, Politics and the Economy. If you are unsure of your level, please take our free placement test.

Conversation with TV5 (Intermediate)
Improve and expand your French using resources available through the French cable channel TV5Monde, their dedicated website. Newscasts, documentaries and movies from francophone countries (France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, the Caribbean, and Africa) will be used to help you understand French as it is spoken in the real world.

The variety of topics you will be asked to comment on will widen your vocabulary and increase your confidence when speaking.

Grammar and Pronunciation - Intermediate

With a focus on grammar and pronunciation, this class will give students solid foundations in grammar and confidence in speaking. The purpose of this class is to help learners take good habits by making a clear distinction between two phonetic systems: the one from their native tongue and the one from the target language. Learners are also encouraged to work on prosody in order to develop oral-aural skills. The ultimate goal is to learn to be conversant in elementary French and to be autonomous in real-life situations.

Literature & History
This class presents a rich overview of 5 centuries of French literature and culture from the Renaissance to contemporary authors. Students will discuss selected works from famous writers from Voltaire to Camus and Sartre. Each author will be studied in the historical and artistic light of their century. A selection of pieces will be read out loud by students in each class then discussed as a group. This class is offered to those who have a solid foundation in French and are interested in French literature and culture.

Revue de Presse

Improve and expand your French using resources available through our e-library Culturethèque, accessible for all members.

Daily newspapers and weekly magazines from France (le Figaro, les Echos, Liberation, le Parisien...) will be used to help you understand French and discover the news through the eyes of a French Journalist. The variety of topics you will be asked to comment and summarize will widen your vocabulary and increase your confidence in your reading, speaking and writing abilities.

 Objectives

  • Improve your reading comprehension.
  • Broaden your vocabulary, especially as relates to everyday situations and daily news debate
  • Develop your speaking skills through conversation on the documents viewed
  • Discover various resources helping you to inform you about actualities in France
  • Familiarize yourself with issues of debate in contemporary French society
  • Summarize an article and edit a short résumé.
