Comic Illustration

More than just superheroes and the funny papers, comic art has a long and rich history extending back to Ancient Egypt and forward to the Graphic Novels of the present day. This course will uncover the roots of the art form while instructing aspiring comic creators in the fundamental craft of telling stories composed of long-form sequential art. Students should bring their own supplies; a suggested materials list will be provided. Open to Adults and Teens 14 and up.

Intermediate Graphic Design: Project Lab

Graphic design is all around us: it is the combination of image and type to communicate visually with purpose and impact. This class is designed to offer students opportunities for further investigation into the principles and practice of graphic design. Through concepts, examples, and executing tangible projects, students will further develop their potential as visual communicators. Projects may include identity and branding, packaging design, advertising, and design for publication. Prerequisites: Introduction to Graphic Design and Typography (or equivalent experience) and working knowledge of Mac computers and Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Students should bring their own external storage device.

Intro to Graphic Design and Typography

Learn the fundamentals of graphic design including composition, the grid system, and color theory. In particular, the course will cover the expressive and conceptual use of type in design. You’ll become familiar with Adobe InDesign, an essential program for designers, while working on projects such as calendars, posters, and business cards. Through projects, hands-on use of the software program, and critiques, participants will leave with a thorough understanding of design and how they can incorporate it into their own lives. Basic experience using Mac computers is required, and students should bring their own external storage device.

Learn the basics of Adobe Illustrator, the industry-standard program for creating graphics, logos, illustration and much more. Introduction to Photoshop
Whether you want to edit and enhance your digital photos or learn to construct digital images and designs, this beginner’s Photoshop course will provide an overview of the program’s editing and design tools. Instruction will cover resizing images, working with layers and masks, manipulating light and exposure levels, color correction, retouching and more. You will leave with an understanding of Photoshop’s editing tools and the ability to prepare files for print or digital use. Basic experience using Mac computers is required, and students should bring their own external storage device and a copy of the book Exploring Adobe Photoshop CS6 (by Hartman and Toland).

Logo Design

An effective, memorable logo is a key element in developing a visual brand. This workshop will take students through the entire logo design process, from exploratory research and idea development to creating and editing designs while focusing on the primary concepts of message, identity and audience. Learn how to create and maintain websites using web-based applications like WordPress. Students will learn how to acquire domain names and host their websites online, and they will leave with an understanding of well-organized site structures and the basic Photoshop skills needed to optimize images for the web.
