Mathworks: A standards based, hands-on approach to math that encourages student grades 1 - 4 to make connections between math concepts and how those concepts are used in the world around us. Each component will feature introduction and mastery of core concepts culminating in hands-on applications.

Component 3*:  

  Fractions/Measurement and Geometry

Week 1:  Core concepts- Numerator, denominator, parts of a whole, equivalent fractions, ordering fractions. 

Week 2:  Hands-On Application-Fraction Circles and Pizza! Students make own pizzas and decorate according to fractions.

Week 3:  Core Concepts-Measurement (time, volume, linear and weight measurements)

Week 4: Hands-on Activity:  Measure the perimeter of the Logos building as a class.  Measure various objects in our room. 
Week 5:  Core Concepts-Geometric Shapes (2 and 3 dimensional) Hands-on Activity:  Be a shape hunting scavenger.  Students will be given a list of shapes to search for and record outside.  Make 3-D shapes out of toothpicks and marshmallows.

Week 6:  Hands-on Activity:  Math quilt (shapes, symmetry) Students will use shapes to create a quilt square pattern and transfer this pattern onto fabric using fabric pens.

Instructor: Debbie Jones is excited for this opportunity to share in the education of your children! She holds a multiple subject teaching credential and a Masters in Education degree from Biola University, and has taught the elementary grades in the traditional classroom for 11 years. She spent the last four years teaching classes for local home school programs. Debbie uses a hands-on approach to teaching which aids in solidifying concepts and in making learning fun!

A non-refundable materials fee of $5 per student will be collected at the first class of each component.
