Science Explorers offers a standards based, hands-on approach to the study of the physical, earth, and life sciences while developing the joy of discovery!

Session 4:  All About Plants (Life Science)*

Week 1:  Plant Cells

Activities:  Looking at plant cells under the microscope.  Make your own slides of Elodia , onion, and algae (4-6)  Go on a plant hunt and look at your specimen under a microscope that magnifies it as big as a TV screen! (1-3)   

Week 2:  A Plant Starts from a Seed

Activities:  View and sample many of the edible seeds that we eat and guess what plant they are from.  Make a seed watcher with some of these seeds (1-6)

Week 3:  A Seed Germinates and a Plant Grows         

Activities:  Look inside a seed to find the baby plant.  See which soil is best for planting. Take home a plant and do experiment.  Bring it back next week. (1-6)

Weeks 4 & 5:  Parts of a Plant

Activity:  A Careful Cutup-dissecting a flowering plant. (4-6)

               Activity:  Making a diagram of a plant and all its parts. (1-3)

Activity:  Leaf Collection and Identification.  A plant’s transport system. (1-6) 

Week 6:  We need plants!

Activities:  Learn how plants make the oxygen that we breathe.  Learn how plants feed us, the parts of different plants that we eat, and make a meal with just plants.

For continuity, students should commit to a full year if possible.

Instructor: Debbie Jones is excited for this opportunity to share in the education of your children! She holds a multiple subject teaching credential and a Masters in Education degree from Biola University, and has taught the elementary grades in the traditional classroom for 11 years. She spent the last four years teaching classes for local home school programs. Debbie uses a hands-on approach to teaching which aids in solidifying concepts and in making learning fun!
Grade Range: 1 - 6

Additional Information

Students will be asked to print out teacher generated lab sheets at home and bring them to class.

A non-refundable materials/lab fee of $5 per student will be collected at the first class of each component.
