Writing becomes engaging and fun when students write with a purpose and connect that purpose to daily life. This class offers students grades 1-3 the opportunity to engage in the mechanics of writing (penmanship), the syntax of writing (DOL), the instruments of writing (dictionary, thesaurus), the process of writing (writer's workshop), and the real life purposes of writing (fun activities). The structure of the class includes*: • DOL (Daily Oral Language) • Penmanship (manuscript and cursive) • Journal writing • Read Alouds illustrating the writing genre with mini lessons on reading strategies • Modified Writer’s Workshop       • prewritewrite       • revise/edit       • publish • Mini lessons on a writing style or strategy       • narratives       • paragraphs       • letters       • descriptions       • thank you notes       • invitations       • poetry       • book reviews       • simple reports, etc.       • fun activities surrounding the publishing of your student’s written work.

·        At-home enrichment packets are available upon request.  These packets contain daily journal topics, penmanship and grammar pages, and writing templates so that your child can continue to develop their writing skills throughout the week.  Also, your child will need to be ready to publish his/her work/s by the sixth week of each session.  As class time is limited, this may require some at-home writing to achieve this goal. For continuity, students should commit to a full year if possible.

Session 4:  Persuasive writing and Oral Speaking.  Fun activities:*  Persuading the class to do or try something and presenting that as a speech.  Week 1:  Overview of persuasive writing with examples. Brainstorming.  Week 2: Complete graphic organizer.  Week 3:  Rough draft.  Week 4:  Revise/edit.  Week 5:  Final draft.   Week 6:  Present speeches for classmates and parents.
