Movie Descriptions

DIVA:When 18-year-old Jules (Frederic Andrei) secretly tapes the concert of a superstar diva who refuses to be recorded, he accidentally winds up with another tape that identifies a top mobster involved in an international sex and drug ring. Suddenly, Jules is being chased through the streets of Paris by blackmailers, hit men and the police. Action, arias and assassins all collide in this romantic thriller directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix.

AMELIE: When impish gamine Amélie (Audrey Tautou), who lives alone, finds a long-hidden trove of toys behind a baseboard in her apartment, she's inspired to repatriate the items, an impulse of generosity that sparks more benevolent acts. A celebration of life and love, French director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Oscar-nominated charmer stresses the importance of small wonders that surround us, if only we paused to look.

THE ITALIAN: Six-year-old Vanya (Kolya Spiridonov) is about to be handed every Russian orphan's dream: A loving Italian family wants to adopt him and take him away from the rundown orphanage he calls home. But Vanya can't let go of his yearning for his birth mother. Determined to find her, he runs away and sets off on an adventure that leads him into a mysterious and sometimes perilous world. This moving drama received several international awards.

BIUTIFUL: Diagnosed with terminal prostate cancer, Uxbal -- a divorced father raising two children -- is determined to atone for his life as a black marketeer in this engrossing character study that unfolds in the slums of Barcelona, Spain.

DIABOLIQUE: The ailing spouse (Véra Clouzot) and manhandled mistress (Simone Signoret) of a sadistic boarding school headmaster (Paul Meurisse) plan and execute the man's murder -- but their plan goes haywire when the corpse vanishes. Henri-Georges Clouzot directs his real-life wife in this icy, black-and-white masterwork of homicide and Grand Guignol suspense, which ranked No. 49 on the Bravo network's "100 Scariest Movie Moments."

THE WHITE RIBBON: A year before World War I, a series of strange and brutal pranks threaten to shatter a northern German town's orderly existence. But the residents' response may have even more disturbing implications for the future. Celebrated Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke helms this Golden Globe-winning, sumptuously photographed black-and-white drama that stars Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Tukur and Theo Trebs.

MALENA: When 12-year-old Renato catches a glimpse of beautiful new bride Malèna, his heart skips a beat. But when jealous town busybodies begin spreading vile rumors about her, Renato must incorporate those falsehoods with what he knows to be true.

A MAN OF SUCCESS: Winner of the Grand Prize at the 1986 Havana Film Festival, Humberto Solás's political drama chronicles the story, beginning in 1932, of two Cuban brothers on very different paths. While successful Javier (César Évora) adapts to the country's changing politics, his brother Dario (Jorge Trinchet) turns to anarchy. Cuba grows increasingly dangerous for both men as Fidel Castro and his revolutionaries threaten the current regime.

LA FILLE DU LA PUSATIER (The Well Digger’s Daughter): Pascale, a widowed laborer, lives in Provence, raising five daughters alone until his eldest daughter returns home to help care for her sisters. But a young pilot and the approaching shadow of World War I change Pascale's hopes for the future. YELLA: Having left her dead-end job and abusive husband behind in pursuit of a clean slate, Yella (Nina Hoss) meets Philipp (Devid Striesow), a savvy executive who hires her as his assistant. At first, Yella is thrilled with her new life -- but the past is not so easily left behind. Her promising start in big business starts to unravel when she begins to experience disturbing flashbacks and haunting visions of her former life.

PRANZO DI FERRAGASTO (Mid August Lunch): As the Italian holiday of Pranzo di Ferragosto approaches, cash-strapped Gianni (Gianni Di Gregorio) gets help from his landlord, his friend and his doctor, who offer financial relief in exchange for Gianni looking after their elderly relatives over the holiday. Four mismatched Italian mamas at the same table make for an awkward, hilarious and touching mid-August lunch in this film festival favorite from Di Gregorio, who also writes and directs.

LO QUE IMPORTA ES VIVIR (Living Is What Matters): Candelario, a rugged unemployed man, calls on Don Lazaro, the owner of a farm estate, and asks for a place to stay in return for his labors; before too long, the extremely capable Candelario is managing the entire farm. Lazaro's wife, Chabela, finds Candelario appealing, and the two are soon embroiled in a romance. When Lazaro attempts to put an end to this dalliance, he suffers an accident that diminishes his mental age to that of a child.
