Alcoholism and Other Substance Abuse Dependency


This class focuses on the assessment and treatment of substance-related disorders for ASW’s and MFTI’s, and is also appropriate for any other staff members who simply want to learn more about this issue. Topics covered include: drugs and their effects, screening and assessment, warning signs, an overview of substance-related disorders, treatment strategies such as relapse prevention, harm reduction and motivational interviewing, dual diagnosis/co-occurring disorders and more.

Course objectives:

· To identify the effects of commonly used substances

· To know the difference between various substance-related disorders

· To identify common issues in clients with: 1) Parents who are addicted; 2) Co-occurring substance and mental health related issues

· To identify common screening and assessment methods

· To identify commonly used treatment strategies such as harm reduction, motivational interviewing and relapse prevention and when to use them

Eligible Participants

Santa Clara County Title IV-E Collaborative training events are free for all who qualify. Eligible participants include:

  • Staff of residential treatment facilities in Santa Clara County
  • Foster and adoptive parents
  • Prospective foster and adoptive parents
  • Santa Clara County social workers
  • Santa Clara County children’s mental health providers
  • Staff of community based organizations that serve children and families in Santa Clara County
  • College and university students in academic preparation to work with families and children

Please arrive 10 minutes prior to the start time to assure registration for the course. Attendees arriving after the start of the training time may lose registration position, and may not be allowed in due to wait list and need for prompt start time. Please cancel in advance if you cannot attend as frequent "no shows" may result in an inability to register for future training.
