Applied Mindfulness: The Importance of Safety

Description

This training will explore a variety of theory and practice around the importance of safety in the lives of young people we serve (who are sometimes or often not safe).  Safety is a foundation of wellbeing, and in many ways a necessary pre-requisite to healing from trauma.  The felt experience of safety is a necessary condition of access to the social engagement platform, which is the neural foundation of health, growth, and restoration.  What is the importance of safety in young people’s lives, and how can we help them to become more aware of, and more deeply experience a felt sense of safety?  This training will combine theoretical inquiry, drawing heavily on the work of Dr. Stephen Porges Polyvagal Theory, with instruction in trauma-informed mindfulness and reflections on deepening intra- and inter-personal safety when working with young people.

-Identify the role of neuroception: the unconscious detection of safety and threat

-Conceptualize foundations of the Polyvagal Theory, with a focus on safety and the role of the social engagement system as a neural platform for behavior

-Analyze neural exercises that strengthen and stabilize the felt sense of safety

-Practice approaches to mindfulness awareness that support an embodied sense of safety for young people
