Applied Mindfulness: Authentically Connecting with Teens

Description

Applied Mindfulness: Authentically Connecting with Teens

Teens are incredibly good at detecting inauthenticity, but thankfully we can develop our skills in authentically relating to them.  In this workshop, we’ll focus on what it means to be authentically present to someone else in our relationships and communication.  We’ll draw from a variety of practices around trauma-informed mindfulness, mindful communication, mindful inquiry, and relational mindfulness.  We’ll explore the power of curiosity, and how being open to someone else’s experience and truth can transform the way that we relate to them.  We’ll explore the importance of deep listening, and practice listening for what’s important to the speaker, rather that what’s important to us.  We’ll talk about relating across differences, and how to open up conversations about difference rather than shutting them down.  And finally we’ll experience and explore the art of skillful self-disclosure, as a way of cultivating relationship.

-Experience the power of curiosity, and how this can open us to someone else’s point of view

-Reflect on and practice deep listening, learning how to tune in not just to the words someone is saying, but what is unsaid, beneath and behind the words

-Discuss the challenges and opportunities of relating across differences, and how to open up conversations about difference rather than shutting them down

-Conceptualize and practice skillful self-disclosure, done with the best interest of the teen in mind, and how this can deepen relationship.
