Drawing & Painting: The Figure
Are you interested in rendering the human form, but worry it's too challenging? This course is intended to put those feelings at ease. Beginning, returning, and advanced students are welcome to explore drawing and painting in this course focused on capturing the spirit and vitality of the figure. Activities will include quick gesture poses and contour drawings. As we become familiar with the nuances of the figure’s line and form, we will work toward longer poses. To create lively and expressive drawings and paintings, we will use materials including graphite, charcoal, and acrylic paint.

We will not approach the human form with mathematical lessons on proportion. Instead, we’ll emphasize ways of seeing and guide you through exercises designed to help you capture the essence of the remarkable human form.

We will draw and paint from a clothed or nude figure model during this class. Model fees are included in the cost of this class.

Drawing: Diving into Color
Is your drawing practice drowning in grayscale? Do you find yourself longing for luminous, bright color but are unsure of where to begin?

Explore the possibilities of color through this introductory course into the complexities of color theory, and learn to use color as a way to create meaning. You’ll learn color mixing techniques and experiment with creating color palettes. You’ll also play with color intensity, and investigate the meaning behind color using varied media, including pencil, charcoal, conté crayon, and oil and chalk pastels.

Through observational exercises and other referents, you will develop a greater understanding of how to use color to create meaning within your work and learn new methods of composing balance, harmony, and unity.

If time permits, students may use acrylic paint to further examine color theory.

Experimental Painting: The Creative Process
Art can be exploratory and fun, so why not approach it as play? In art making and other fields, play can be a vital tool for experimentation and innovation. Beginning students will gain confidence as they work through experimental painting exercises, while more advanced students will be challenged to do something new. In this acrylic painting course, problem solving, spontaneity, chance, and unique materials will direct artistic processes, yielding interesting and complex works of art. Esteemed instructor Stephanie Lane has a soft spot for expressive painting and mixed media, so we'll spend time exploring these approaches as well.

All skill levels are welcome to explore representational and/or abstract painting in this relaxed, supportive class. Our instructor will offer one-on-one instruction, and lead informal discussions to create a learning environment where knowledge and skills are shared by all participants. New and returning students are welcome!
