Fall: Ages 18+

Art Journals
An art journal is a book kept as a visual record of your thoughts and ideas. In this course we will make one or more simple bound journals, which we will then fill with art, images, and words. We will decorate the pages using a wide variety of techniques and media. Taking inspiration from several contemporary artists, we will draw, paint, stamp, collage, and write in our books. Each participant will take home one or more small books filled with a combination of personal art, imagery, and ideas. No experience necessary, just a desire to be creative and explore!

Additional Information

Class will not meet on November 6 or November 20.

Drawing & Painting: The Figure
Are you interested in rendering the human form, but worry it's too challenging? This course is intended to put those feelings at ease. Beginning, returning, and advanced students are welcome to explore drawing and painting in this course focused on capturing the spirit and vitality of the figure. Activities will include quick gesture poses and contour drawings. As we become familiar with the nuances of the figure’s line and form, we will work toward longer poses. To create lively and expressive drawings and paintings, we will use materials including graphite, charcoal, and acrylic paint.

Students will draw and paint from a clothed or nude figure model during this class. We will not approach the human form with mathematical lessons on proportion. Instead, we’ll emphasize ways of seeing and guide you through exercises designed to help you capture the essence of the remarkable human form.

Experimental Painting: The Creative Process
Art can be exploratory and fun, so why not approach it as play? In art making and other fields, play can be a vital tool for experimentation and innovation. Beginning students will gain confidence as they work through experimental painting exercises, while more advanced students will be challenged to do something new. In this acrylic painting course, problem solving, spontaneity, chance, and unique materials will direct artistic processes, yielding interesting and complex works of art. Esteemed instructor Stephanie Lane has a soft spot for expressive painting and mixed media, so we'll spend time exploring these approaches as well.

All skill levels are welcome to explore representational and/or abstract painting in this relaxed, supportive class. Our instructor will offer one-on-one instruction, and lead informal discussions to create a learning environment where knowledge and skills are shared by all participants. New and returning students are welcome!

Papercutting is an ancient art, practiced throughout the world, but its popularity has just begun to grow in the United States. In this two-session workshop, you will learn the basics of knife cutting from accomplished papercutter and visual artist Melanie Kehoss. Students will then apply that skill to creating a small table-top light box. Most materials will be provided; students only need to bring a pen, (Xacto) knife, self-healing mat, and ruler.

The Art of Meditation through the Mandala
Over the last few years, the popularity of the “adult coloring book” has exploded. These books tap into something that many of us feel is lacking in our daily lives: space for relaxation, meditation, and escape from the overstimulating culture we live in. Join this six-week course to become the artist of your own meditative pages of patterns. We’ll begin with a look into the history of the mandala, the beautifully symmetrical form first created as a tool for ancient Buddhist meditation. Through our study of the mandala we will discover the rich possibility for symbolism and spirituality in art, experience the calming effect of working with repetition, and practice creating our own intricate mazes of line and color. Come celebrate the patterns of daily life and discover the deep soothing power of the mandala.
