Weekday Classes

Contemporary Classical Figure Drawing

This six-week course introduces students to techniques and concepts of classical figure drawing, with a focus on the nature of light as it pertains to modeling the forms of the human figure. We will draw weekly from a live model via Zoom, focusing on one or two long-poses. Each week will begin with a brief lecture, and students will have the opportunity to practice new techniques and develop their ongoing drawings during and after a demonstration by the instructor. This is followed by individual critiques. The online nature of this course provides the rare opportunity for students to follow the instructor demonstration while drawing from the same perspective. Class content will be tailored to the specific group of students.

Students are welcome to take this course one time, or to continue with subsequent sessions throughout the year for longer-term study.

Drawing from the Works of Old Masters

This six-week online course with instructor Rami Baglio, was inspired by a workshop that she teaches in New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Working from a selection of high-resolution images from the Met archives and elsewhere, students are provided with the exciting opportunity to observe and draw from old master drawings and prints including works by Prud’hon, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Rembrandt. Concepts discussed will focus on the logic behind hatching and specific mark-making, composition, and a classical understanding of light and form.

This course is for anyone curious or excited about drawing, who’s marveled at classical works and wondered how they were conceptualized and constructed. Open to all skill levels and backgrounds.

Students are welcome to take this course one time, or to continue with subsequent sessions throughout the year for longer-term study.

Gouache: The Perfect Sketch Medium

Taught by CFA Faculty member, John Wellington. John has often referred to his favorite color sketch medium as "watercolor for those artists that make mistakes". Gouache, unlike watercolor, allows for buildup of white and light colors with the ability to work on colored and toned papers. In this way, the application process is similar to oil paint, but with a much less toxic medium. This six week class will focus on working from the model online, painting both quick and longer poses each week, along with demos and a weekly sharing of our work. There will be full review of materials on week one.

Working in gouache offers artists a great opportunity to work quickly in color, correct and adjust drawing, value and color, in an easy to use medium.

Indirect Painting: The Portrait

This class has been designed to remove some of the mystery of the almost magical techniques of the European Masters. Painting from the model on zoom, students will learn how to develop a grisaille (a monochromatic under-painting), and then add semi-opaque layers of color and transparent glazes to realize an almost inner glow when painting flesh.

Demonstrations by John Wellington will include advanced blending techniques, glazing, rendering forms in light and shadow, applications of warm and cool layers of color to give depth to flesh, and how to balance both perceptive and conceptual skills in depicting the features of the face. Although not an “artist’s materials,” class there will be a thorough review of brushes, paints, media, linens, wood, aluminum, and copper prepared panels.

There will be one six-week poses with the live model through Zoom. A good internet connection is important for this class.

Landscape In Watercolor

This course examines the language and techniques of watercolor painting from Landscape. Students will paint using a variety of strategies derived from current and historical practice. This class focuses on a free watercolor approach. The goal is to transmit and exemplify what you see in nature to the paper, learning to simplify and avoid overworking, using the watercolor properties of causing accidents without losing control. This "spontaneous" method of applying watercolor paint is what gives life to the paintings of masters like John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Anders Zom, to list a few. Assignments include copying paintings of these masters, as well as self-directed tasks using pictures from the instructor and the students. Learning through step-by-step demonstrations: how to draw, color mix, use tonal values, control brushwork, and create a composition. The basics of watercolor must be understood to achieve its freshness. The instructor decodes this difficult medium in parts, to help the student learn to let the medium "paint itself". This course is excellent for beginner and intermediate artists who are looking to take their watercolor painting to the next level.

This class will give students the unique opportunity to look through Marcelo's eyes while he demonstrates, lectures, and answers questions in real-time from his studio. Marcelo will have one camera fixed on his painting and palette (right on his hands) and one camera on him as he works. Students will get closer than ever to Marcelo's process. After class, students will receive an exclusive video recording of Marcelo's demonstrations.
