Ever wondered how different designs and shapes could be woven in tapestry? Do you love colors and yarns, but want a new way to use them? Explore what you can create on a simple loom with just the basics of plain weave and a selection of colored yarns. Students will be given a simple cardboard loom which will be prepped in advance and instructions on plain weave and other options. Suitable for beginners.

Note: Students may purchase a frame loom from the instructor for $20.

Basketry: Random Weave Birdhouse

Ceramics

Crochet Basics
 

Crochet, the act of pulling of yarn through other loops of yarn, can be used to make articles of clothing, housewares and works of art. Students will learn basic stitches and terminology as well as how to read a crochet pattern. Projects in class will include a basic scarf and making and joining granny squares. Materials for first project are included in the class fee. Students must provide their own yarn after the first project.

Cyanotype Sun Printing
 

Explore this early photography technique to create original designs and images on paper and fabric. Cyanotypes result in a distinct blue image that appears when chemistry is exposed to sunlight. Students will create their own negatives and make use of found objects for images that can be framed, made into note cards, used for collages, book arts and more. No camera or previous experience required. Students may bring objects from home or from nature, some objects provided.

Drypoint Etching
 

If you like to draw, you will love drypoint etching! Learn the basics of etching the low-toxic way, without solvents or acids. Students will create drawings on small plexiglass plates that will be hand inked, and printed on an etching press. Students will have the opportunity to make multiples of the same image and experiment with the inking process. Students are encouraged to arrive prepared with ideas, or ready to improvise their imagery on the spot. Perfect for all levels from complete beginners to more experienced printmakers. Intermediate Making Comics

Making Comics
 

Students will learn how to plot, plan, and prep an eight page mini comic, on the topic of their choice. Secrets of Shibori: Stitches & Knots
 

Shibori is a Japanese based technique of knotting, stitching, tying, folding, and wrapping to create patterns and images in fabric. Indigo dye works harmoniously with shibori to show off these designs. Students will have the opportunity to create samples of various stitches and knots in cotton fabric and design a silk scarf based on these samples. Students will also learn how to build and maintain an indigo vat and to use it for dyeing their fabrics.
