Acrylic Painting Techniques

Acrylic is a popular fast-drying water-soluble paint that consists of pigment suspended in an acrylic polymer emulsion.  Learn to make exciting paintings with this versatile paint medium. Specific techniques will be demonstrated by the instructor followed by exercises and projects that employ those techniques. These techniques include: impasto effects where paint sits on the surface and conveys depth and texture; dry brush techniques and transparent glazing with acrylic for layering color; and methods for blending one color into another for a smooth gradation. This class is appropriate for students at all levels of experience.

Introduction to Color Theory: A Workshop

Painters, graphic and fashion designers, decorators, anyone working in the visual realm professionally or for fun knows that color knowledge is a vital part of the process. Some color choices made on the basis of “I just like the way it looks” can be very successful, but an understanding and knowledge of the dimensions of color and how it works can put you in control of results you want. Through painting and cut paper exercises students learn the perceptual properties of color: hue, intensity, chroma and value.

We will discuss the different color systems such as RGB, CMYK and the standard painter’s color wheel. Discover how color affects mood, creates depth, rhythm and movement in painting, fashion, environment or artifact. The course considers theory and science of color perception from Renaissance painters, 18th century explorations of Newton and Goethe, through the impressionists and  significant contributions of  Bauhaus theorists like Johannes Itten and Joseph Albers. Student projects examine the shifting relationships of color perception. The course also covers the limitations of pigments, the pitfalls of color mixing and an intelligent strategy for choosing which colors to buy to get a complete palette.

Painting from Plants: Flowers as a Source of Expressive Color and Form

In this course we will examine and discover color, form, and pattern found in flowers and other plant material. Using acrylic paint on paper or canvas, students will observe forms and colors found in nature.

In this course students will make finished paintings of vivid and intricate plants and flowers.  We will examine composition, color theory and color interaction. Students will become familiar and confident with mixing colors. Students will explore the variety of possibilities acrylic paint has to offer as a material, and will become familiar with observational painting as source material for making work. While this is an observational class focused on painting from plants, we will also delve into more expressive and interpretive uses of color and form in the paintings.

This course will mainly be composed of in class work, one on one discussion, critique along with slideshows of contemporary and historical painting and a field trip to look at paintings in person. We will explore painting in a fun, relaxing and supportive atmosphere.

Please bring a $40 materials fee, payable to the instructor, to the first class.
