Certified Medical Assistant

Certified Medical Assistant

This comprehensive class will prepare students for career opportunities in the Medical Assisting field. Certified Medical Assistants provide direct patient care and perform clerical duties in physician's offices, urgent care, and other ambulatory settings. Content includes administrative skills, EMR, clinical skills (phlebotomy, injections, vital signs, minor surgical procedures, and more), medical terminology and externships.

Upon completion of the course, with satisfactory grades and attendance, students may sit for the National Healthcareer Association's clinical and administrative certification examinations, (A $270 value at no additional cost). Externships are 160 hours following 18 weeks of classroom instruction.

  • Prerequisite: High school diploma or equivalency. 
  • Completion of the program does not guarantee employment.
  • Students must possess a valid state issued identification
  • Recent TB test (within 12 months of the start date of externship).

In order to fulfill the requirements of the Certified Medical Assisting Program at Golden Oak Adult School, students must be able to meet the physical demands associated with the profession. Individuals wanting to register for CTE, (Career Technical Education), medical courses and graduate from medical programs must be able to meet the physical and emotional requirements of the academic program.

Physical demands are generally described as medium (exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body). The Certified Medical Assistant must be able to observe safe practice criteria in assisting patients. The Certified Medical Assistant must be able to safely support the full weight of a patient when necessary.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, and peripheral vision.

In addition, students admitted to the programs must possess the following qualities:

  • The emotional maturity and stability to approach highly stressful human situations in a calm and rational manner.
  • The ability to make clinical judgments using critical thinking.
  • The ability to adhere to ethical standards of conduct as well as applicable state and federal laws.
  • The ability to provide effective written, oral, nonverbal communication with patients and their families, colleagues, health care providers, and the public.

Because of the unique responsibilities involved in all health professions, Golden Oak Adult School reserves the right to require that the student who appears to be unsuited for any program therein withdraw from the program or be guided into another curriculum of study at the school.

An individual who poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others or themselves may be denied admission, progression or graduation. The school's determination that a person poses a direct threat to themselves or others will be based on an individualized assessment that relies on current medical evidence or on the best available evidence to assess the nature, duration, and severity of the risk and the probability that the potential injury will actually occur.

Certified Pharmacy Technician

This 18-week course prepares students for entry level employment working in various pharmacy settings and practices which includes:  assisting the pharmacist with mixing and packaging prescriptions, inventory control and purchasing, collecting payment, and coordinating billing.  The course contains both theory and clinical components, including:  Medical Terminology, Pharmacy Law, Anatomy and Physiology. Externships are 120 hours, Monday - Friday for an additional 4 weeks in June.  Students must possess valid state issued identification, and a high school diploma.  Class fee includes:  books, background/drug screening, and ExCPT exam fee!

Certified Phlebotomy Technician I

The Phlebotomy Technician I program prepares graduates for entry-level positions as phlebotomists in hospitals, clinics, Laboratory Service Centers and physician’s offices.

Our LFS/DHS approved CPTI programs include 48 hours of lecture and 40 hours of practical experience at nearby externship sites for students with no work experience or  “Advanced” 48 hours of lecture for students with phlebotomy experience. Upon successful completion of the program, our students will have met all of California State’s requirements to become a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I, including the completion of an approved national online examination. 

Books, materials, supplies and externship included in tuition.  Externship is scheduled upon course completion and exam taken.
