75 Hour Basic Training

75 Hours Basic Home Care Aide Training (Initiative 1163)

This training is a combination of 3 sessions for a total of 75 hours – the sessions can be taken in any order. Training is required for new caregivers employed after 1/7/2012, or existing caregivers who were not employed as caregivers at any time in 2011. Classes include:

    • 5 Hour Orientation and Safety
    • 40 Hour Core Basic Training
    • 30 Hour Population Specific Training

*Please note, this is not the DDA training.



Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Types of Credit student can choose to receive on their 6 hour certificate:

- Population Specific (no testing done)

- Continuing Education (written testing required) 

Population Specific certificates can count toward a student's 75 hour basic training completion. 

 

Description: This is an online course hosted on-site in a group setting. This is not an Instructor-led course. Great option for those without access to a computer at home, or those that don't feel knowledgeable with computer usage on their own.  Course covers TBI Introduction, Effects of Injury, Cognitive Impairments, Emotions, and Recovery.

Basic Training - 40 Hours
Core Basic Training is an enhanced version of Revised Fundamentals of Caregiving, teaching Long Term Care workers the skills and knowledge needed to provide basic care to a client. This 40 hour course is a combination of Instructor lecture, activities, and hands-on skills practice in our fantastic skills lab. Students also receive information on the State certification testing process during this course. This class is part of the 75 hour Basic training for new caregivers program.

Brain and Spinal Cord Disabilities

Description:

The first part of this course discusses what Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are. Students will take a look at how the location of the TBI will affect the person’s abilities afterwards, how sleep affects TBI recovery, and outline proper care guidelines. Part two of the course takes students through information on spinal cord disabilities, what autonomic dysreflexia is, goes over bowel programs, and identifies safe Hoyer lift practices.

Dementia

Description: 

This updated State-developed course provides in-depth training for workers on the specialized needs and care of individuals with dementia related issues. This curriculum replaces the Dementia LTC Worker and Manager Specialties previously taught. Methods included in course are to help explore and handle challenging behaviors such as: physical violence & aggressive behaviors, the impact of dementia on communication, how to effectively assist a person with dementia with ADL’s, differentiation between hallucinations & delusions, intervention strategies, dementia’s effects on sexuality, medications, and supporting caregiver’s well-being, understanding what dementia is/is not, trauma-informed care, and working with families.

- Students that are taking this class to receive the Level One - Dementia Capable Caregiving certificate, must pass written testing with 80% or higher. Testing is done at the end of the class. Any retest needed must be completed within 30 days of class. 

-Students taking this for Population Specific credit may choose to test or not. Those that choose not to test will receive the Population Specific certificate.

- Students must bring a valid photo ID to class in order to be allowed to take the end of course exam.

Description:

The State-developed course provides in-depth training for workers on the specialized needs and care of individuals with mental health issues. The course includes a general overview about mental health disorders, cultural sensitivity, respectful & non-judgmental communication, tools & methods to handle challenging behaviors, identifying decompensation & relapse, crisis & suicide intervention, and basic information regarding medication.

-Students that arrive after 15 min late will be asked to reschedule.

-Students taking this class for Specialty credit will need to pass a written and skills exam with 80% or higher.

-We advise students taking the manager exam to come back during a test date to do their first try at the exam after studying further in order to give them the highest chance at success. Testing is offered Tuesdays at 9am. Students can choose to take manager exam at end of class if desired though. 

-Students taking this class as part of the Population Specific training may choose whether or not to test. Students choosing not to test will receive a Mental Health Population Specific certificate

Orientation & Safety Training - 5 Hours

The 5 Hour Orientation & Safety training is part of the 75 hour Home Care Aide Certification courses. This class is done in a self-study format as a manual to read through with a basic overview into the field of caregiving and what the student will need to know to remain safe on the job.

Orientation topics include the care setting, job responsibilities, the care plan and care team, client rights, documentation and reporting, mandatory reporting, and basic communication methods and techniques.

Safety topics include body mechanics, worker safety, accident prevention, emergency , disaster, and evacuation preparedness, hand washing and gloves, infection control and standard precautions, fire safety and prevention and fall prevention. This class does NOT count for CE credit.
