MHFA is a groundbreaking early intervention and public
education program that teaches community members about behavioral health and
how to assist a person experiencing a behavioral health problem. MHFA teaches
the skills needed to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of
behavioral health challenges or crises. First Aid is administered until
appropriate treatments and supports are received or until the crisis is
resolved.



This training will be held over two sessions, you must
attend both to complete.

 

April 6 from 9am - 1:30pm.

Educating After Trauma: Trauma-informed practices for adult educators

Are you an educator working with adults who have experienced trauma or violence? As an educator, are you sometimes frustrated or confused by your students’ behavior in your classroom? Do you want to learn new ways to create a welcoming environment in your classroom that addresses some of the barriers to learning your students bring?  


This workshop will help you understand some of the causes of student behavior and offer some possible solutions.  We will learn basic information about trauma, its impact, and trauma-informed practices for tutoring and classroom settings.  We will commit to an action plan for shifting our work to be more trauma-informed.

Formative and Summative Assessments in the ABE and ESL Classrooms
This session is for participants interested in expanding their knowledge around formative and summative assessment in the ABE and ESL classrooms. In addition to describing the characteristics of these assessments, participants will also come away from this interactive workshop with a plan for implementing different types of assessments in their classrooms, as well as, easy to adapt models of assessments.  Throughout the workshop participants will be engaged in a series of activities and interactive discussions around questions such as: what are best practices related to assessments, how do I plan and follow up on assessments in my classroom, and how do I use information from summative assessments to establish benchmarks for instruction?

Supporting Reading and Pronunciation Development with Adult ESL Learners
This session will cover two main topic areas in the Adult ESL classroom: teaching reading and teaching pronunciation.  Participants will come away from this interactive workshop with ideas for activities they can immediately implement with their adult ESL learners to support development in reading and pronunciation.  The workshop will address questions such as: What reading skills can I teach my adult ESL learners, and how do I incorporate them into a lesson in an engaging way?  How can I use authentic materials to teach reading to all levels of ESL learners?  How can I help my adult ESL learners set reasonable goals related to pronunciation?  What strategies can I use to help learners improve their pronunciation?  Participants will be engaged in a series of collaborative activities to build their own knowledge around best practices related to reading and pronunciation instruction as well as in creating learner-centered activities in these areas.

Workers' Rights on Health and Safety for the ESL Classroom
This
workshop is directed to ESL teachers and tutors who are interested in their
students’ health and safety rights and responsibilities at the workplace.
Through this presentation, facilitators will help ESL students understand what
is safe or unsafe, what the hazards present at their workplace are, and most
importantly, how immigrant workers can improve their safety working as a team
with management and other resources. We will share a curriculum with lesson
plans that include activities such as body maps, role plays and games that acknowledge
the challenges on preventing injuries and fostering safer workplaces. This
workshop aims not only to raise awareness about student’s responsibilities and
protections as new workers in the U.S. but aims to create a network of support
that advances safer workplaces.
