Supporting Returning Citizens in Adult Education

This session is designed to provide awareness and tools that can assist adult educators in teaching and working with returning citizens. A returning citizen is defined as someone who has been directly impacted by the criminal justice system; this does not necessarily have to be via incarceration. There are many complications that can impact an educator’s ability to effectively educate a returning citizen. Through interactive and exploratory exercises, educators will gain a better perspective of what uniquely can distract a returning citizen from his or her academic goals.

  • Participants will learn of tools, resources and program that are uniquely designed to assist returning citizens
  • Participants will be exposed to the complexities and commitments that can demand the attention of returning citizens
  • Participants will have had the opportunity to share their thoughts, concerns and questions with those directly impacted by the criminal justice system
