Audio Projects


The Audio, Photography, and Video Projects courses provide documentary artists the opportunity to work with award-winning professionals in small group settings. Each term, CDS invites three established artists to teach the Projects courses, which are designed for individuals who are working on projects and seeking creative guidance. The courses are designed around the specific needs of participants, who share excerpts from their works-in-progress.

Students may take the course for credit more than once. Certificate students are required to take a Projects course in their chosen concentration before enrolling in the Final Project Seminar; in this case, the objective is to emerge with a nearly finished version of their project, ready for a final polish. DocuArts Retreat


This four-day winter institute is designed to give students traction on their projects, at whatever stage of completion. Working in small groups with accomplished practitioners, students in the early stages of their projects will gain insight into the effectiveness of different media and methodologies, with the goal of mapping a plan of attack; students midway through their projects will get perspective on the work they’ve done, with an eye toward editing down the raw material they’ve acquired and discovering what holes remain to be filled; while students nearing completion will receive advice on the finishing touches that will result in a polished piece. Guest lecturers will offer perspective on the documentary process. Groups are organized by medium, but there are plenty of opportunities for cross-fertilization.

This course is a requirement for the distance certificate and must be taken in both the first and second years. Local students seeking expert guidance and a jolt of momentum for their projects are also encouraged to attend. (24 hours/All Levels)

Final Project Seminar in Documentary Studies


This seminar is organized around group discussions of student projects, including how best to complete those projects, along with guided planning on how best to present the works to their intended audiences. Certificate students who have met all other requirements and have done substantial work toward their intended final projects may request admission to the course. Participants who successfully complete their projects during this course will be awarded the Certificate in Documentary Arts.

Students must declare their intention to enroll at the beginning of the term. Before enrolling in this class, students must complete a Projects course in the medium of their choice—Audio, Photography, or Video (an independent study will be arranged for students working in other media). Please contact Continuing Education director April Walton ([email protected]) if you plan to enroll. On Tuesday, May 21, students will share their work with a public audience at the Full Frame Theater at American Tobacco Campus. (18 hours/Advanced)

Fall Seminar: Randolph Benson is a graduate of Wake Forest University and of the North Carolina School of the Arts’ School of Filmmaking. His film Man and Dog has appeared in film festivals worldwide and has garnered numerous awards, most notably a Gold Medal in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Student Academy Awards. His work has been featured on HBO, Bravo, the Independent Film Channel, numerous public television stations, Canal Plus–France, Telewizja Polska S.A.–Poland, and KBS-Korea. Benson received an Eastman Kodak Excellence in Filmmaking Award at the Cannes Film Festival and a First Appearance Award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam.

Spring seminar: Nancy Kalow, a longtime instructor at CDS, is co-chair of the selection committee for the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. Her video documentary Sadobabies was a winner of a Gold Hugo at the Chicago Film Festival and the Special Jury Trophy at the San Francisco Film Festival. Since 2015, she has been working with undergraduates on an oral history research initiative, "Refugee Lives," funded by Duke University and the Mellon Foundation.

Durward Rogers is a filmmaker with an interest in scientific and technical documentaries. He started practicing film photography at the age of nine and has used Photoshop and digital cameras since they were first released. Before earning his Certificate in the Documentary Arts, Rogers spent twenty-five years as a computer graphics engineer, working on such projects as the world’s fastest graphics supercomputer and the original Xbox. He is currently working on a film about climate change.

Additional Information:
The class will be conducted online. A late-model computer, fast internet connection, and built-in camera are recommended, though not required. Students with less than optimal hardware or internet connections are welcome to take the course, though it may be difficult to participate fully in virtual meetings.

Intensive Introduction to Documentary Studies: Ethics and Practice


This intensive, weeklong class is designed for distance students who are pursuing the Certificate in Documentary Arts and fulfills their introductory course requirement, but it is also ideal for any student wishing to get a grasp of the basic history and principles of documentary work. This course will feature a variety of guest speakers, including photographers, filmmakers, writers, and audio producers. We emphasize not only methodologies but also philosophies and ethics of fieldwork in different settings. Students will explore examples of fieldwork and at the final meeting will present project proposals of their own. These proposals may be the beginning of long-term documentary initiatives or simply a means to help decide on the direction of a future project. (38 hours)

Michelle Lanier is the newly appointed director of the N.C. Division of State Historic Sites and Properties. She was formerly the acting director of North Carolina’s African American Heritage Commission and Curator of Multicultural Initiatives with North Carolina’s State Historic Sites. She has been an instructor at CDS since 2000. She uses her background as an oral historian and folklorist to connect communities around personal narratives and cultural expression. She has traveled to Panama and Ghana to document African Diaspora funerary traditions, and her ethnographic work in a South Carolina Gullah community led to her role as a liaison to the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. Growing up in a family that includes veterans of five American wars has inspired her current work, training students to collect veterans’ narratives.

She helps clients place an honest and compassionate assessment of themselves into the context of the systems within which they work. Salyers is also a writer, performer, and lecturer. Introductory Seminar in Documentary Studies: Ethics and Practice


This course is designed for students in the Certificate in Documentary Arts program or those who plan to enroll. The documentary arts—including photography, video, audio, and writing—encompass many genres and numerous means of interacting with the world and its people. Instruction will focus on methodologies as well as philosophies and ethics of fieldwork in different settings. Students will explore examples of documentary work and will present project ideas of their own in the final session. (20 hours/All Levels)

Introductory Seminar in Documentary Studies: Traditions (Online)


This course is designed for students in the Certificate in Documentary Arts program or those who plan to enroll; it’s also suited to non-certificate students with a general interest in interdisciplinary traditions of documentary work, with an emphasis on twentieth-century practice. Students will be introduced to a range of documentary idioms and voices, including the work of photographers, filmmakers, oral historians, folklorists, musicologists, radio documentarians, and writers. (16 hours/All Levels)

Bryce Lankard is a North Carolina native and graduate of UNC–Chapel Hill. His work has been published in numerous magazines, including the Village Voice and the New York Times Magazine. In 1995 he co-founded Tribe Magazine in New Orleans, serving as creative director. After Hurricane Katrina he cofounded the nonprofit New Orleans Photo Alliance. Since returning to North Carolina, he has helped develop and coordinate what is now the Click! Triangle Photography Festival. His most recent project, “Drawn to Water,” debuted as a solo exhibition at Flanders Gallery in Raleigh in October 2016.

Jim Haverkamp is an award-winning filmmaker and editor based in Durham. His credits include the short films When Walt Whitman Was a Little Girl, It Had Wings, and Armor of God. Haverkamp has also worked as an editor on several feature documentaries, including Monster Road, Doubletime, and Rarefied. Haverkamp has served on the selection committee and awards juries of the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, and he is co-organizer of Durham’s Strange Beauty Film Festival.
