OSHA Standards for the Maritime Industry - OSHA 5410

Course Description:

This course covers OSHA policies, procedures, and standards for the maritime industry. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to define Maritime terms found in the OSHA Maritime Standards, identify hazards that occur in the Maritime industry, determine appropriate abatement controls. 

Students will be provided a copy of the Federal OSHA Maritime standards and current industry information.  Successful completion of the Maritime Standards course meets a portion of the pre-requisite requirements for attending the OSHA 5400 Trainer Course for the Maritime Industry.

Who Should Attend?

This course is recommended for individuals responsible for overseeing safety in marine terminals, long shoring, and shipyard operations, as well as those looking to enter the Maritime industry in a supervisory capacity.

Topics include:

  • OSHA Maritime Safety and Health Standards
  • Policies and procedures for inspection and citations
  • Use of the standards to supplement an on-going safety and health program
  • Key OSHA requirements for shipyard employment, marine terminals, and long shoring operations

Trainer Course for the Maritime Industry - OSHA 5400

Course Description: For those who are interested in teaching the 10-hour and 30-hour maritime safety and health outreach classes to employees and other interested groups. Course participants learn effective instructional approaches and the successful use of visual aids and handouts. This course authorizes the student to become a trainer in the Maritime Outreach Trainer Program and to conduct both 10- and 30-hour maritime safety and health courses for shipyard employment, marine terminals, and longshoring, and to issue cards to participants verifying course completion.

Students in this course must prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA maritime outreach topic and successfully pass an exam at the end of the course to become an authorized outreach trainer.

It is highly recommended that a laptop is brought to class to work on developing presentations.
