Digging In: An Artists' Retreat


This retreat brings together documentary makers and storytellers of all stripes for a productive, invigorating, and rejuvenating week of digging deep and making meaningful progress on individual projects. For audio producers, writers, photographers, filmmakers, multimedia creators, et al., Big Shed designed this retreat to help you delve into the work that’s most important to you (work that’s often hard to make time for). If you have a story you’re trying to finish, a project you’re researching or developing, a proposal you need to write, or maybe you just want space to think about your creative trajectory; spend a week as part of a great group of creatives, all of whom are doing the same thing! Guiding the way will be instructors to be named later. And in case you need more convincing, course fees include tasty lunches throughout the week. (40 hours)

Additional information:
Enrollment fee includes dinner the first night and lunches throughout the week. Students are responsible for housing and transportation.

Intensive Introduction to Documentary Studies: Ethics and Practice


This intensive, weeklong class is designed for distance students who are pursuing the Certificate in Documentary Arts and fulfills their introductory course requirement, but it is also ideal for any student wishing to get a grasp of the basic history and principles of documentary work. This course will feature a variety of guest speakers, including photographers, filmmakers, writers, and audio producers. We emphasize not only methodologies but also philosophies and ethics of fieldwork in different settings. Students will explore examples of fieldwork and at the final meeting will present project proposals of their own. These proposals may be the beginning of long-term documentary initiatives or simply a means to help decide on the direction of a future project. (38 hours)

Michelle Lanier is the newly appointed director of the N.C. Division of State Historic Sites and Properties. She was formerly the acting director of North Carolina’s African American Heritage Commission and Curator of Multicultural Initiatives with North Carolina’s State Historic Sites. She has been an instructor at CDS since 2000. She uses her background as an oral historian and folklorist to connect communities around personal narratives and cultural expression. She has traveled to Panama and Ghana to document African Diaspora funerary traditions, and her ethnographic work in a South Carolina Gullah community led to her role as a liaison to the Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor. Growing up in a family that includes veterans of five American wars has inspired her current work, training students to collect veterans’ narratives.

Joy Salyers is a folklorist and a professional adviser on ethical and effective practice for individuals, organizations, and projects. She helps clients place an honest and compassionate assessment of themselves into the context of the systems within which they work. Salyers is also a writer, performer, and lecturer. She serves on advisory groups for several current documentary projects, and has taught in CDS’s Continuing Education program for more than a decade. See www.joysalyers.com.

Making It Sing: An Audio Documentary Intensive


This intensive six-day workshop for producers with some experience—or a lot—gives you a chance to focus on a challenging project or to stretch and try something new. You’ve recorded interviews and gathered sound, and you’re ready to construct a six- to twelve-minute audio piece. You’ll bring your own recordings, logged, transcribed, and ready to go. You’ll get instructive sessions and personal, small-group guidance from seasoned radio producers (and from your peers) as you structure and script your story, record your narration tracks (if any), and mix your piece on CDS’s Hindenburg workstations—or, if you prefer, on your laptop with your own editing software. Saturday morning, we listen! The intensive will be led by John Biewen, along with guest instructor Shea Shackelford. (35 hours)

John Biewen is audio program director at the Center for Documentary Studies. Besides teaching summer audio intensives and undergraduate courses, he produces documentaries and features for NPR, PRI, American Public Media, and other public radio audiences. Biewen has been making radio since 1983, including eight years spent producing documentaries for American RadioWorks. His work has won many honors, including two Robert F. Kennedy Awards, the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award, and the Third Coast International Audio Festival’s Radio Impact Award. In 2015 he launched CDS's biweekly podcast Scene on Radio.

Shea Shackelford
is a documentary producer and a founder of Big Shed Media, an award-winning public media shop specializing in audio and multimedia production. When he isn’t producing his own stories, Shackelford is busy training producers and helping organizations design and create their own media projects. He is the creator of the Place + Memory Project, and his awards include a Best Documentary: Bronze Award at the 2010 Third Coast International Audio Festival. He has been part of the CDS summer audio intensive team since 2005.

Additional information:
Please bring your own recordings to the intensive. Students can edit on their own laptops or on our desktop workstations, which have Hindenburg and Adobe Audition audio editing software.

Master Class: Nonfiction Writing

 
This workshop brings students together with professional writers and editors for an intense week of collaborative discussion, revision, and writing. Students in the workshop will read and discuss the ongoing projects of fellow students, work individually with the instructors to refine and shape their own projects, and participate in readings and round-table discussions with top figures in the publishing world. Throughout the week, students will have the space and time for sustained, concentrated writing, as well as access to the world-class Duke University Libraries system. This is a workshop on craft, structure, and the art of writing great nonfiction, and a rare opportunity to be guided closely by top editors and writers. (38 hours)

Haven Kimmel is the author of eight books: Two memoirs, the #1 New York Times bestseller A Girl Named Zippy and She Got Up Off the Couch, and Other Heroic Tales from Mooreland, Indiana; four novels; and two books for children. She graduated from Ball State University with a degree in creative writing and studied with the novelist Lee Smith at North Carolina State University. She is currently working on a horror novel and a non-fiction collection of essays about Quakerism. She lives in Durham.

Janine Latus is a freelance journalist and the author of If I Am Missing or Dead: A Sister’s Story of Love, Murder and Liberation, which made bestseller lists in New York, London, and Toronto. She is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and a former board member of the American Society of Journalists and Authors. Her work has appeared in Discover, O, The Oprah Magazine, Parents, Fitness, More, and dozens of other magazines and websites. She is at work on her second book, about her recent year living as a nomad.

Barry Yeoman is a Durham-based freelance magazine journalist whose recent work has appeared in The American Prospect, Saturday Evening Post, onEarth, Audubon, and Parade. He is the author of “The Gutbucket King,” a longform multimedia profile of New Orleans bluesman Little Freddie King, published by The New New South. He specializes in putting human faces on complex social, political, and environmental issues. His website is barryyeoman.com.
