This course is for people who know little or nothing about Islam, the world’s second largest religion,  and want to learn more — people with Muslim friends or colleagues, who have traveled in a Muslim country, who have taken the instructor’s popular Muslim history course (Fall ‘17), or who know nothing about Islam beyond what we hear in the news.  The only requirements are an open mind, reading one book, and participating constructively in the conversation.  We will read and discuss Sumbul Ali-Karamali’s The Muslim Next Door: The Qur’an, the Media, and that Veil Thing.  Ali-Karamali is a Muslim mom and lawyer who grew up in California, comes from an Indian-Pakistani background, and writes with an accessible and humorous style.  Please read the introduction and chapters one and two before the first session.  We will begin with an overview of Muslim theology, practices and spirituality, and move on to discussions of Muslim history, differences among Muslims, and gender issues in Islam.  The book is available for purchase at the Book Rack, 13 Medford St., Arlington, and other locations. Lori Kenschaft has a master’s in theological studies and a doctorate in American history.  She is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist and has been offering adult religious education courses related to Islam for a dozen years.  Thanks to her generosity, we are able to offer this course at a discounted price to all community members.
