Tutor Now, English as a Second Language offers theory and techniques specific to tutoring learners for whom English is not the first language, and whose level of literacy in their native language ranges from pre-literate to highly advanced.  

Participants will learn:

  • Second language acquisition theory
  • Goals setting and lesson planning
  • Strategies for teaching speaking, listening, reading and writing

Volunteers are required to read material and complete assignments online by the end of the class. 

NOTE: The Office of adult Education reserves the right to cancel a Tutor Training class when the minimum capacity (8) has not been reached.

Tutor Training REQUIREMENTS & EXPECTATIONS

Volunteers interested in participating in the Office of Adult Education's Tutor Training program must agree to the following requirements and expectations:

  • 6 months of tutoring commitment (2 to 3 hours per week)
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have at least a high school diploma or equivalent.  However, some college and/or training program experience is a plus.
  • For referrals to some providers, a Bachelor’s Degree may be required.
  • Have basic computer and Internet skills, with access to a reliable computer and Internet
  • Must register for the training
  • Must attend and complete every part of the training including the online portion
  • Arrive to training on time or be no more than 30 MINUTES LATE
  • If a training is missed, or a significant amount of training content is missed due to lateness, early departure, or any other reason, an “incomplete” grade will be issued

Age Range:  18  -  & UP
