EMS - Basic Life Support

Emergency Medical Technician

An Emergency Medical Technician is a certified pre-hospital health care professional who is capable of providing Basic Life Support (BLS) at the scene of an emergency and while en route to the hospital. Emergency Medical Technician work is both physically and psychologically challenging. Emergency Medical Technicians are employed by fire, police and rescue agencies, hospitals, private ambulance companies and in a variety of business and industries with a high potential for accidental injury or illness.  Therefore, all Emergency Medical Technicians must understand how to handle an emergency situation, control bleeding, apply splints, assist with childbirth, manage airway control, administer oxygen, perform cardiac care and other basic life support (BLS) skills.

Becoming an Emergency Medical Technician requires strict training. Training classes prepare students to function as practitioners in the prehospital emergency medical environment. The curriculum meets the requirements of the PA Dept. of Health, and the National Registry of EMTs. Students who complete the program successfully will be eligible to take the National Registry written and practical examinations for certification.

Part-time Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) training classes meet usually two days/nights per week, with occasional weekend sessions being required.  Occasional mandatory days will occur throughout the 6 month course of instruction. Attendance is extremely important. Classroom absences are strictly monitored and clinical or field absences are limited regardless of the reason.

The part-time Emergency Medical Technician training classes are held in locations throughout Montgomery County. The classes start quarterly.  The primary course location is:

  • Montgomery County Public Safety Training Campus, Conshohocken, PA

The 224-hour course is designed to prepare the candidate to take the NREMT psychomotor and cognitive exams.  It includes classroom, lab and field internships at various locations in the Southeastern PA region.

The Full-Time (Pre-Professonal accelerated) Emergency Medical Technician training class meets Monday – Thursdays at:

  • Montgomery County Public Safety Training Campus, located in Conshohocken, PA.
  • Arcadia University, Elkins Park, PA

These accelerated classes last approximately 6 – 8 weeks during the summer months, with the same final goals being achieved as the part-time course.

All of the EMT courses include classroom lectures and hands-on skills labs, along with field/clinical internship experiences.  Students who have successfully completed the didactic and clinical components of this program will be eligible to sit for the National Registry Exam.

Please note: PA Criminal Background checks and Child Abuse Clearance Forms are required for entry into the EMT programs.
