Description

THE NEW ENGLAND VAMPIRE FOLK BELIEF:

THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE

In 1990, a sand and gravel operation accidently discovered an 18th-century farming family burying ground.  The state archaeologist was called in to conduct rescue excavations of 29 burials effected by the mining activity.  All the skeletal remains were in proper anatomical position in their graves, except for one adult male that should dramatic signs of rearrangement of the bones.  Results of forensic and historical evidences suggests that this individual was believed to be “undead” and was capable to leaving the housing of the grave and feed on living family members.  This vampire “feeding” was considered the cause of the spreading of diseases, like tuberculosis.  The re-arrangement was necessary in order to put the “vampire” to final rest.
